Avast is free for home users and does an excellent job of keeping your machine virus free.

Windows Defender
Microsoft's free antispyware program. Spyware is software that is downloaded usually without your knowledge or consent. It often times is included in other software programs like toolbars or Peer to Peer filesharing software. Spyware tracks where you go on the internet to send you targeted advertisements. Eventually spyware will corrupt your Internet Explorer and cascade to Windows Explorer. This causes your system to slow and you may be unable to open explorer programs like My Computer or Control Panel.
